In 2007, UNICEF estimated that the number of orphan children living in Haiti to be about 380,000. Following the earthquake of January 12, 2010, that number has skyrocketed to be more than 600,000 creating an unprecedented urgent need for accommodation for these homeless children.
Moved by compassion and love, Jericho Place set a goal of ultimately providing a loving home to 1,000 boys and girls. The first orphanage Clement Robitaille will open January 10, 2011.
The orphanage will provide a loving and nurturing environment to initially 200 boys and girls. Our intention will be to care for their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
Clement Robitaille Orphanage itself was formerly a hotel of 3 buildings with a total of 150 rooms. The orphanage carries the name of the founder of the hotel Clement Robitaille, a Canadian benefactor to the Haitian community, who died and was buried on the property in Haiti. His wishes were that one day these properties would be used as an orphanage. It is ideally located in a suburb on the south coast of Port-au-Prince and includes facilities such as conference rooms, a cafeteria, a recreation centre as well as a dispensary.
One of the buildings, housing some of these facilities, has been severely damaged by the earthquake leaving 97 of the 150 rooms still in good operating condition. The two remaining buildings will be immediately used for dormitory, schooling, and administration purposes until completion of the renovation of the facilities.
Clement Robitaille orphanage is a branch of Jericho place, a Canadian Registered Charity that has been providing loving care and education to homeless children in Haiti since 2006. The operation of the orphanage will be entirely transparent and distinct from the operation of Jericho Place. Moreover, its financial reports will be available on line.
